There is no single best AI image generator for marketing, because the right one depends on four things you can check: whether you may use the output commercially, how well it handles text, how well it follows your brand, and what each usable image really costs. This guide covers what we could verify about eight models on 2026-11-01 and gives you a six-prompt test to settle the rest on your own brief.

We have not yet published our own side-by-side outputs, and we say so below. Most lists that rank AI image tools are written by vendors that rank their own tool first. Here the table says what a primary source or a dated news report supports, and marks everything else as unchecked.

Several rows say "VERIFY" or "not reviewed" on purpose. A claim you cannot trace to a page you can open is not worth building a budget on.

What makes the best AI image generator for marketing: four checks

1. Rights: can you use the output commercially?

This is the first filter, not the last. Midjourney's $1,000,000 revenue rule, as reported from its plans documentation, means a larger company on a cheaper plan may be outside the terms. Free tiers can carry their own limits, and Recraft's free plan is the clearest example in the table above. For the legal side, read whether you can copyright AI-generated images: the US Copyright Office concluded that prompts alone do not give enough control to make the user the author.

2. Text inside the image

Text errors are the most visible failure in ads. OpenAI's release is reported to target dense text, and a Beebom writer says Nano Banana 2 seems to handle text better than before, but both are opinions about newer releases, not measurements. Run the text prompt in the test below and count wrong characters yourself. If the text is small, check contrast too: WCAG sets a minimum of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.

3. Brand control

Can the tool hold your colours, your composition rules and a reference set? That depends on features that change monthly. Write your rules down first, using our one-page AI brand guidelines template, and give every model the same block.

4. Cost per usable image

The plan price is not the cost. Use this formula:

cost per usable image = monthly plan price / (images you generate x share that are usable)

If a plan costs 20 units a month, you generate 200 images, and four in ten are usable, the cost is 20 / 80 = 0.25 units per usable image. Change the share to two in ten and the cost doubles. The usable share is the number vendors do not publish, which is why you have to measure it.

The six-prompt test

Run the same six prompts through every model you are considering. Use your real brand colours and one real product. Do not edit the outputs before scoring.

  1. Text-heavy social post. A square graphic with a five-word headline and a 12-word subline, in your brand colours.
  2. Product on a plain background. Your product, front view, with space left for copy.
  3. Lifestyle scene with hands. A person using the product, hands visible.
  4. Layout with a safe zone. A 4:5 banner with the left third left empty for a logo.
  5. Exact colour match. A background in one named hex colour, with a flat shape on top.
  6. Edit, don't redraw. Upload a real product photo and change only the background. Check that the product, label and logo are unchanged.

Score each output from 0 to 2 on subject, layout, text, colour and product fidelity (10 points per prompt). Count an output as usable if you would publish it after a five-minute edit. The share of usable outputs feeds the cost formula above.

Which model to try first

Use these as starting points for your own test, not as rankings.

  • You want to start for free: Nano Banana 2 is reported to be available to all Gemini users at no cost, so it is a low-risk first run. Check the terms before using results in paid campaigns.
  • Your ads depend on exact text: put ChatGPT Images 2.0 in the test, since the launch coverage highlights dense text. Verify with prompt 1.
  • You are a larger company: check the Midjourney revenue rule and Adobe's indemnity wording before you shortlist either.
  • You need a head-to-head on ads: see Midjourney vs Nano Banana vs ChatGPT Images for a ten-brief scoring sheet.
  • You are choosing a tool for ad variations: compare the platforms in AI ad creative tools, which generate many sizes and versions at once.

What we have not tested

We have not run the six prompts through these models and published the outputs. We have not measured usable share or text error rates. When we do, the results, the prompts and the date will be added here with a change note. Prices are omitted because we could not confirm current US prices for most plans; open each vendor's page from a US browser before you budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI image generator good enough for marketing?

Possibly, but check the licence first. Nano Banana 2 is reported to be free for all Gemini users, and free tiers elsewhere can restrict commercial use. Test on your own brief and read the terms.

Do I have to disclose AI-generated images in ads?

Sometimes. The rules depend on where the ad runs and what it shows; we cover them in a separate guide. Keep a record of which images were AI-generated either way.

Who owns the image I generate?

Ownership under copyright law and ownership under a tool's terms are two different questions. Our copyright guide covers the first; the vendor's terms answer the second.
